GoSmart Help!

Needing some more information about our GoSmart card? We've put together some frequently asked questions that may answer your query.

What is a GoSmart card?

It is a plastic smartcard - a form of electronic ticket, with an embedded microchip that stores your travel information. Smartcards are re-usable and can be loaded with any GoZone ticket, excluding all-day tickets.

Is there a charge for my GoSmart card?

Your GoSmart card is free when you register online at gosmart.mcgillsbuses.co.uk.

How soon will I receive my GoSmart card?

Once we receive your online application, your new GoSmart card will be posted to your registered address within 10 working days.

When can I use it?

Once you receive your GoSmart card, you can log onto your online account and buy your GoZone ticket. Please wait 4 hours, from buying your GoZone ticket, and activating it on the bus.

What about under 16s?

Children under 16 can apply for their own GoSmart card. Proof of age may be required by a McGill's staff member, or agent acting on our behalf. This is under for under 16s travelling with a child ticket on their GoSmart card. A Young Scot card is an example of an acceptable form of ID.

What about under 5s?

Children under 5 travel for free when accompanied by an adult. They do not require a GoSmart card.

Using your GoSmart card

What tickets can I add to my GoSmart card?

You can add any GoZone ticket to your GoSmart card, except all-day tickets.

How can I pay for my ticket?

You can pay using your credit, debit card or with your PayPal account. Just log onto your GoSmart account, select your ticket and then pay using your preferred method.

Can I add a ticket on the bus?

No, you can add and pay for your ticket using your GoSmart account.

Can I add a ticket at SPT offices?

Yes, you can add a GoZone ticket to your GoSmart card at SPT outlets in Buchanan Bus Station and Greenock Bus Station.

How do I use my GoSmart card to travel?

It's easy - simply 'tap & go'. Tap your GoSmart card on the ticket machine of the bus.

What happens if I lose my GoSmart card?

Don't worry. We can block your GoSmart to prevent anyone else from using it. You can then log on to your account and order a replacement card. Go to manage 'my cards' from the top right menu. If you have tickets on your lost GoSmart card, please call our customer services team to discuss. McGill's is not responsible for any travel costs incurred between the reporting of a lost or stolen GoSmart card and the receipt of your replacement card. Any tickets bought in such circumstances are non-refundable. Once stopped, your original GoSmart card cannot be re-activated.

Can I use my GoSmart card on other modes of transport?

Not yet. It is currently acceptable on all McGill's services. You are free to travel across all routes as determined by your chosen GoZone ticket.

What happens if my GoSmart card stops working?

In the unlikely event of your GoSmart card not working, you can order a replacement card by logging on to your account and selecting 'manage your cards' from the top right menu.

Is my GoSmart card transferable to other people?

Yes, you can sign up and order more than one card per account, if you wish to order for another person. This can be useful if you organise and pay for travel tickets for yourself and others, e.g. parent or guardian also organising children's bus tickets.

I can't access my online account

How do I reset my password?

If you have forgotten your password, the quickest and easiest way to reset your password is to click 'forgotten password' on the login screen. After entering your email address we will email you a new, temporary, password which you can change after you log in for the first time.

How do I buy tickets online?

Just log onto your account at gosmart.mcgillsbuses.co.uk and follow the onscreen instructions. Please note that your purchase will only be available for travel on the bus after 4 hours.

Are my payment details secure when I buy tickets online?

We ensure the security of your online payment transactions through the adoption of the payment industry standard PCI DSS. We do not hold any information about your financial transactions other than details of the types of products you purchase, and when and where the purchase was made.

Are there any charges for using my debit or credit card?

There are no additional charges for using a debit or credit card.



If I have bought a ticket I can no longer use, how do I get a refund?
