£2 Fare Cap

The £2 Fare Cap commences on 7 September 2026. Here’s what you need to know, including answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

What is the £2 Fare Cap?

The Scottish Government’s £2 Fare Cap means passengers travelling within the Strathclyde region will pay a maximum of £2 for a single journey.

When does the £2 Fare Cap start?

The £2 Fare Cap starts on 7 September 2026.

Which McGill’s services are included?

The £2 Fare Cap applies to McGill’s services within the Strathclyde region.

Does it apply to Night Bus services?

No. The £2 Fare Cap does not apply to Night Bus services.

What if my journey normally costs less than £2?

If your normal single fare is less than £2, you will continue to pay the lower fare. The £2 Fare Cap is a maximum, not a flat £2 fare for every journey.

Does the £2 Fare Cap apply to children?

Yes. The £2 Fare Cap also applies to children’s single tickets.

Do I still need to tell the driver where I’m going?

Yes. Please tell the driver your destination before you pay. This is required so we can record the journey correctly, even when the fare is capped at £2.

Can I buy the £2 fare on the McGill’s app?

No. The £2 Fare Cap ticket must currently be purchased on board the bus.

Is the £2 fare always the best-value ticket?

Not always. If you travel frequently throughout the day, week or month, our Day, Weekly Saver or Monthly Saver tickets may offer better value for money

What happens to tickets I’ve already purchased?

Any tickets you have already purchased will still be honoured. However, refunds will not be available.
